Iron Man (real name Anthony "Tony" Edward Stark) is a widely-known superhero and a founding member of the Avengers. A brilliant inventor, he designed the revolutionary Iron Man Armor, a high-tech exosuit powered by the Arc Reactor in his chest.[1] He was a well-known and successful CEO of Stark Industries before his involvement with superheroes. Now he works as a futurist and the Avengers' founder and leader.

Appearance

Without his armor, Tony Stark is a Caucasian male in his early 30s or late 20s. He has brown hair in the first few episodes of the series, but in Super-Adaptoid it changes to his classic black hair. He has brown eyes and a thin goatee. He is also tall, wears a black t-shirt with brown pants and uses a wristwatch for communication. He has his Arc Reactor located in his chest.

With his armor, he looks like a humaniod robot with a red and gold color scheme. The Arc Reactor is still noticeable. He has a golden mask that can flip up to show his face.

Stark attacked in Afghanistan

At age 21, Tony took over his parents' company Stark Industries after their recent passing. Originally, Stark followed in his father's footsteps and continued to manufacture weapons for the military. Several years later, Stark Industries became the biggest weapons manufacturing corporation in the world. Stark never realized the true danger of weapons and only cared about the money, but all this changed when he saw its disastrous potential for the first time ever up close. He went to Afghanistan to debut his latest weapon, the Jericho Missile. But on the way back to the airbase he was ambushed and taken hostage by a terrorist group called "The Ten Rings". They forced him to build weapons for them in exchange for his freedom and maintaing his survival. The "survival" part is due to a heavy cluster of shrapnel near his heart which was placed after the attack, and the only thing keeping him alive from it was an electromagnet holding the shrapnel in place powered by a car battery. With the help of fellow prisoner Ho Yinsen, Stark was able to modify and upgrade the electromagnet into an Arc Reactor which could power his heart and all the weapons they needed for escape. They used the Reactor to build and use a weaponized suit of armor to escape with. But the attempt to buy time for the armor to fully operate cost Yinsen his life; though Stark escaped and vowed to use both his mind and his company to develop technology to make the world a better place and to honor Yinsen's name. A few months later, he officially became Iron Man. Over a year later, he helped form the Avengers alongside Captain AmericaThorThe HulkHawkeye, Black Widow, and possibly others.

Encountering Molecule Man

Back in the early days of the Avengers, Stark led the attack against Molecule Man, however lost his armor in the process. After Molecule Man's weapon disappeared into the sewers, Tony sarcastically berated Hawkeye for taking away the opportunity to study it to which Hawkeye awkwardly said sorry.

Reforming the Avengers

Residing in his laboratory, Tony checked over Thor, Hulk and Hawkeye as they engaged in battles against some of their old enemies. While JARVIS suggested that he could just contact them, Tony related that he had broke up the team for a reason and tried to express his thoughts before being cut off by a detection of Captain America on his monitor, displaying that he was currently fighting Red Skull and having difficulty doing so. Tony said it could not be right, reasoning that Captain America could fight an army of HYDRA men with "one arm and a rolled-up newspaper" before actually noticing that it was Red Skull he was fighting against. After JARVIS confirmed that it was the real Red Skull, Tony suited up and rushed to the scene, ushering to Captain America that he would only require a few more seconds and that he had his back before seeing his longtime ally seemingly vaporized by Red Skull and lashing out in a fit of rage at the villain.

Iron Man pushed by Red Skull

Despite his best efforts, Iron Man is unable to exact revenge on Red Skull.

After shooting a multitude of missiles at Red Skull and getting on the ground, Iron Man ordered him to drop Captain America's shield and soon found himself questioning why HYDRA had become so advanced after having JARVIS scan their equipment. Charging at Red Skull, he was easily knocked over and told by Red Skull that he was just a man in a suit. Things grew even worse when M.O.D.O.K. arrived, whom Tony questioned the presence of before the villain used his own powers to inflict damage on Iron Man. After the two left, Iron Man briefly mourned the death of Captain America before deciding to activate the Avengers Protocol, which reached Hawkeye, Thor, Black Widow, and Hulk.

The signal also went out to Sam Wilson (a high-ranking SHIELD agent and tech specialist who was moon-lighting for Tony in secret for several months), whom he was suggested by JARVIS to wear the War Machine Armor while joining the Avengers. Talking to Thor, Hawkeye and Hulk, Iron Man explained that the Avengers were reassembling after being handpicked by him. While Hawkeye tried to laugh at his choice to lead the team, Iron Man told him that it was not the time for jokes and revealed to the three that Captain America was deceased before showing them a statue he made in his honor. Iron Man revealed to them that he had fallen at the hands of M.O.D.O.K. and the Red Skull while showing them a video made of the fight. Iron Man told them that if the two were working together, then the world was now at risk before making it known to them that he was aware they all had reasons to walk out and admitting that he could not do it alone.

After the three agreed to help him, Iron Man departed with the Avengers to Red Skull's base of operations, located in the arctic. After getting out of the Quinjet, Thor asked Iron Man what their plan was to vanquish Red Skull. Iron Man told him to hit everything hard before jetting off to fight. While battling the HYDRA agents, he took cover with Hawkeye, whom expressed distaste in having no plan. Iron Man told him to continue shooting his arrows and they would soon be fighting Red Skull before he was grabbed by M.O.D.O.K. with the use of his powers to control his armor. He was saved by Black Widow, whom had just arrived. After being saved, he confirmed Captain America's death before being told by Black Widow that he better stop acting solo and actually lead the team before he lost more friends that day. Iron Man told the four that M.O.D.O.K. was cloaked and enlisted help from the group before Black Widow told him to scan for his skull. After leaving the group behind, he found Captain America and Red Skull in cage-like containers. He took Captain America out and held him as he stressed that being a leader was harder than he had thought. Captain America asked him if he had left his entire team behind for him before Iron Man questioned how he would know that, immediately being struck across the skull by Captain America.

M.O.D.O.K

Tony is stripped of his armor by M.O.D.O.K..

In actuality, Captain America and Red Skull had switched bodies. As Iron Man was beaten around by Red Skull in Captain America's body, he revealed to Tony his motive for the transplant and told him that he was the end of the Avengers. He was soon saved by Captain America, who was in Red Skull's body and remarked that he hoped it was him as they dueled against Red Skull. They were aided by the arriving Avengers and soon, the seven were attacked by M.O.D.O.K. before he set his sights on Iron Man, whom he used his powers on to remove his armor and arc-reactor and transfer it to Red Skull, whom dubbed himself Iron Skull.[2]

Aftermath

Following having his arc-reactor and armor removed from him, Iron Man was held in the arms of Captain America as the Avengers made their way through the snow. While Captain America told him to stay with him, Tony questioned how a guy could pass out in peace with him yelling like he was before continuing to experience anxiety due to his arc-reactor's removal. In the Captain America's attempts to determine his condition, the veteran of the team asked Falcon how Tony was holding up without his reactor. Falcon would have compared him in his condition to a car, had it not been for Tony, whom said that he would be a really cool car if he was. While the team intended to take the Quinjet, they were unable to, as M.O.D.O.K. had it destroyed. They instead took Black Widow's vehicle, where once inside Tony laid helpless as Falcon tried to check his condition.

While Falcon checked over him, Tony ordered the new member of the Avengers to get him to the Avengers Mansion. After arriving near the Avengers Mansion, Captain America carried Tony inside, soon placing his body on a table and allowing Falcon to work on him, whom plugged a multitude of cords into his chest and urged him to stay alive as he put it on maximum-voltage. After getting out of his bleak state, Tony related to the Avengers that his recent electrocution was something he would never want to do again and thanked Falcon sarcastically for not electrocuting him on his first day as an Avenger. After Falcon requested if Iron Man could repeat himself in order for his statement to become his ringtone, Tony remarked about rookies before asking JARVIS for the Mark 50, which he stated was not ready before Tony requested it again. After making his way towards the other Avengers and grabbing onto a pole, Tony thanked Sam and told him that he could be nice before continuing that he did so when he almost died. In the meantime, M.O.D.O.K. deployed manifestations of his own to attack the Avengers directly at the Avengers Mansion.

While inside, Iron Man introduced his teammates to the Mark 50 and expressed interest in knocking the red off of Red Skull by himself before Captain America tried to correct him, assuming that he meant they would defeat him together. It was with this that the Avengers leader made clear that he had doubt in assembling the team again, reasoning that he activated the Avengers Protocol because he believed Captain America had died before telling the latter that since he was alive and he himself had survived, they had wins all-around and told them that it was back to the grind. After the Avengers expressed distaste in Iron Man willing to disband the ground again and Captain America questioned if he was serious after what they had just survived, Iron Man told him that it looked that way.

In their downtime, the Microbots that M.O.D.O.K. deployed on the Avengers Mansion started to infect the team and caused the Avengers to start attacking each other in uncontrollable rage. However, Iron Man soon discovered this and tried to warn Falcon, telling him that he was not wearing a face-mask and to get out of there before the latter said M.O.D.O.K.'s name, thereby causing him to open his mouth and inhale the Microbots. Iron Man developed a cure for the Microbots and used it on his teammates before being grabbed by Hulk, whom he redirected to smash M.O.D.O.K. instead of him. Leaving the group behind, he made his way into the Avengers Mansion, where he saw Red Skull, whom he had previously detected and served as the catalyst for him approaching the mansion to begin with. Initially fighting Red Skull by himself, he was soon joined by the other Avengers and watched as their shared enemy teleported before them. Their troubles had not ended, as the Avengers Mansion had been rigged to blow by Red Skull. After getting out of the mansion in time, he assured Hawkeye that his comic books were in storage, having been placed there three months prior and talked to Falcon briefly before deciding to talk to the entire team after Hulk questioned if the Avengers were gone. While talking to the Avengers, he expressed his belief that Red Skull would return, only with stronger allies to aid him in his quest to defeat the team. After Hawkeye questioned if JARVIS had told him of this, he revealed to the team that S.H.I.E.L.D. had received Red Skull's message to supervillains around the world and announced to them his decision to keep the team together and introduced them to their new headquarters.[3]

The Super-Adaptoid

With the demonstration of Captain America's fighting on a simulation, Iron Man tried to appear to Captain America to "change with the times" by donning an armor of his own, also keeping the color scheme and a upgraded shield to go along with it. Captain America disagreed with the choice and cited that armor would slow him down as Tony began to assert that he was afraid of keeping up with modern technology, causing Captain America to sarcastically ask about how some of their simplest appliances worked. Jarvis interrupted the two to get them to view a broadcast of Justin Hammer, who had ridiculed the Avengers and claimed that he and Hammer Tech could do a better job of being heroes than they were before challenging the Avengers to come and met him.

Taking the bait, Iron Man arrived to the destination of the challenge. As he explained to Captain America on the way there as to why he was taking it, Iron Man knew that the Avengers did not want a guy like him running around with something powerful and harmful at his disposal. Meeting Justin, Iron Man quickly dusted off his attempts to soften him and the others up and demanded that he get to the point. Hammer sent out the Super-Adaptoid, an invention of his, to attack Tony. Being tackled by the robot, Tony soon engaged it and was beaten prior to regrouping with the rest of team. As the robot scanned for weaknesses, Tony threw a attack at it and discovered that it could easily regenerate itself and take the attacks of whoever had taken aggression against it.

Irony

With the robot seemingly defeated, Iron Man warned Justin to stay out of the weapon game before he hurt someone. Following their leave, Iron Man held the robot in low regard as Captain America reminded him that it had used the powers it had acquired from the group to attack him and brought up the possibility that it could still be working. Justin attacked the Avengers at their tower later that day, being the face on a rebuilt and refurbished version of the Super-Adaptoid. The specimen had indeed copied their abilities and was ready to go against them. Iron Man engaged him with the others, as it became apparent that group was outmatched by their collective abilities. Iron Man's ego came into play and after doing some scanning on him under the directions of Falcon, learned that Captain America had been the one to determine that their abilities had been learned. Iron Man was taken down, being insulted by Justin and asked if he was ready to admit that he was better. During the gloating, Iron Man related to him that his ally Captain America was approaching him. Steve hit him with a projectile and followed after him. In his own downtime, Tony checked in on the other Avengers and questioned Captain America while seeing him in the sky with Justin. With the Captain succeeding in defeating in Justin, Iron Man was impressed by his learning of new technology and even stopped his viewing of a simulation he had made, to take notes, much to Captain America's delight.[4]

Iron Man urged J.A.R.V.I.S. to hurry in preparing his armor, as he overheard panicking from outside. Once J.A.R.V.I.S. was done, Iron Man flew outside to see what the problem was, learning from J.A.R.V.I.S. that a meteor was heading towards Earth and it the result of a planet exploding.[5]

Iron Man was personally picked out by Nick Fury to not be made aware of Black Widow's mission to hunt down Molecule Man. Despite this, he learned of his son Molecule Kid's escapee when witnessing the effects of the wand, arriving to help his teammates. He subdued Molecule Kid with a single blast, causing the effects on the city to cease as he grabbed the wand, calling Molecule Kid's defeat "remarkably easy" and questioning what the Avengers had been doing that whole time and expressing his assumption to Black Widow and Hawkeye that Nick Fury had kept him in the dark over the mission. Iron Man told the pair of what he could do with molecular manipulation and as he rambled, he told the pair that they would not be able to take credit for the success after Black Widow claimed they did not need his help, recommending Hulk being brought for the mission and becoming distracted, allowing Molecule Kid to regain the wand, only for Iron Man to strike it and cause it to break into two as Black Widow and Hawkeye caught it. A flash of light emerged and Iron Man attempted to escape it, holding Molecule Kid who questioned why he would help him after what he had done, Iron Man reasoning that it was what the group did and instructing him to say, "Cheese" after stating that they would not be able to escape the flash.[6]

Personality and Traits

Iron Man at times is mistaken to be self-absorbed and arrogant, only to worry for himself on the battlefield. But actually he is caring and worries for others, which is why he didn't initially want to become the official leader of The Avengers in the first place. But after his genius intelligence and quick-thinking proved to be effective on the battlefield, he agreed to become the new leader, replacing Captain America. He used to be arrogant and self-absorbed, when he was a weapons maker.

Powers and Abilities

Iron Man has no superpowers of his own and thus has to compensate for his lack of them by using and utilizing sophisticated high-tech suit of armors he created.  He often used other armors of any type to fight villain and assist the Avengers.

Most of his armors have super-strength, flight, speed, and repulsors and any other special high-tech weaponry and gear, which he makes up for not having his own superpowers.

Abilities

Iron Man mostly relies on his armor to fight and survive the battle but Captain America taught him how to fight without his armor and use his intellect to create innovative weapons.

  • Genius-level Industrial Genius: With his industrial genius, Tony Stark can create new weapons and gadgets out of anything for his new armor and his Avenger teammates.
  • Expert Engineer: Tony Stark can build an repair his armor even modifying them for better use in the field.

The miniaturized Arc Reactor in Tony's chest grants him not only the ability to keep his heart from failing, but it also generates extra energy which was diverted to grant himself "upgrades", such as:

  • Enhanced Mental Processing: Stark's IQ levels are beyond peaked to allow increased mental stamina so he can become smarter than he was before.
  • Accelerated Metabolism: He can eat a high amount of food without gaining fat as well as be resistant to normal flu, colds & alcoholic consumption. He can also recover faster than normal humans from any injury or intoxication, although it is at a level of an Olympic level athlete. This allows him to don a muscular physique without even working out.
  • Enhanced Reflexes: His physical structure is enhanced to gain quicker response time and reflexes
  • Full Armor Control: The reactor's unique signature also allows Tony to be the only one that can access his armor (not including the Red Skull, who stole the original reactor as well as Mark 49 Armor to become the Iron Skull).
  • Skilled Combatant: In "Savages", Stark punches Justin Hammer without his armor, easily knocking him out. Captain America asked him to come with him to training to work on it and Stark agreed.

Equipment

Not only does Tony have an incredible mind, but his array of technology birthed from it truly makes arguably the smartest man alive. Some of these grand inventions include:
