"Molecule Kid" is the 8th episode of the first season of Avengers Assemble, and the 8th of the overall series.

Overview

Hawkeye and Black Widow take on a covert S.H.I.E.L.D. mission to bring in Molecule Man's son Aaron where Nick Fury wants the mission to be kept private from Iron Man. But when he's revealed to have a world-bending weapon that was wielded by Molecule Man, they realize keeping their mission a secret may be a fatal mistake when A.I.M. Agents, MODOK, and Super-Adaptoid target Molecule Man's son so that Red Skull can shape the world into his own vision.

Synopsis

Hawkeye and Falcon are at a carnival, where Hawkeye is winning repeatedly thanks to his archery skills. When Falcon leaves, Black Widow catches him with her grapple, stating that Molecule Man has returned and leading Hawkeye to remember an earlier encounter with him, stressing that they should tell Iron Man before Black Widow asserts that she was given orders by Nick Fury not to inform him. When Falcon comes back, the pair attempt to hide their mission and they begin pursing what appears to be Molecule Man, only to learn from his encounter with A.I.M. agents that he is really Molecule Kid, the son of the former villain. After getting away from the A.I.M. agents, and Black Widow and Hawkeye multiple times, he manages to escape the two by trapping them in "honey", only for Captain America to stop his pursuit of Batroc the Leaper to come to their aid.

The two hold off Super-Adaptoid while Captain America unsuccessfully attempts convincing Molecule Kid to give up the wand, Falcon then interjecting himself and fighting against Super-Adaptoid while Black Widow and Hawkeye take turns trying to convince Molecule Kid to hand over the wand. Iron Man stops him from causing a dimensional rift initially, though another takes its place when he breaks the wand into half. In this dimension, Super-Adaptoid fights the Avengers, Iron Man's repulsor blasts not affecting him though he is affected negatively by the wand of Molecule Kid thanks to it being effective on non-organic beings. Iron Man, Black Widow and Hawkeye convince Molecule Kid to try preventing the dimension from ceasing their existence and he succeeds with the aid of Iron Man. Once returned to their proper dimension, the Avengers destroy Super-Adaptoid and Nick Fury confronts them, Iron Man recommending Molecule Man and receiving an apology from Black Widow before she and Hawkeye make up.

Background information

Production notes

During the flashback sequence (which Hulk and Thor only appeared in), several of the Avengers are depicted using the character models from the previous series The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Also, there was a reference to Nick Fury's program for teenage heroes as seen in Ultimate Spider-Man. The Hulk was absent likely due to his show Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. premiering and putting together a team of other Hulks thus explaining his absence. With the exception of The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, all these references point to all 3 shows sharing the same continuity in some way.
